THE HEADQUARTERS building of Tamilnadu Petroproducts Limited (TPL) is located on Cenotaph Road in the heart of Chennai on a site which is 4200m2. The building with a basement, ground and three upper floors has a total area of 7,900m2. The front wing houses the head office of the company and the rear wing is occupied by various tenants. The entry to TPL is from a high lobby facing Cenotaph Road while the tenants' entry is from the north facing Chittaranjan Road. The upper floors on the north are recessed to form a terrace garden at the first floor with steps leading down to the front. This floor was planned to house a gymnasium and other social facilities with a direct access through the terraced garden as this facility was meant to stay open after office hours. The longer side which faces north on to Chittaranjan Road has a facade with set–backs on each floor forming landscaped terraces at all levels. The office areas open on to these green areas enhancing the ambience of the workspace.
Apart from surface parking that is available for visitors, there is additional parking for the occupants in the basement. The basement also houses some of the building utilities.
The exterior has a facing of Dholpur stone with relief lines of Kotah. The stone slabs are fixed with stainless steel clamps creating an air gap of about sixty millimetres between the wall and cladding. This system known as dry cladding helps preserve the stone from the effects of lime leaching from cement mortar and maintains the surface quality of the stone in pristine condition.
Since the building is partially rented the utility designs are such that energy consumption can be individually monitored for each floor. Similarly the air-conditioning systems are also segregated floor-wise.
