Safal Market, Bangalore
THIS MARKET is located on the outskirts of Bangalore is a wholesale market and auctioning centre for fruits and vegetables that serves the farmers in the region, modeled on the European system of markets.
The master plan is based on a intense and complex traffic flow. In the early morning peak hours almost six hundred trucks enter the market and have their papers processed and cargo unloaded in the warehouse. Being a facility that works twenty four hours a day and seven days a week means that there is little time to attend to road repairs, the design and specifications for roads and hardstands were, therefore, very critical.
It has a modern auction hall outfitted with an electronic bidding system where the bidding can be viewed on a giant screen behind the auctioneer. The auctioning center is connected to a set of warehouses – one for fruits and another for vegetables, each having its own temperature and humidity controls. The fruit section also has special ripening chambers for bananas. A cold storage facility with several compartments at different ambient conditions has also been provided.
